Burn Socks, Go Sailing

If you are like me and don’t throw your socks away until they have at least two holes, then the sight of folks throwing perfectly good socks into a fire may cause some trepidation. For the residents of the Maritime Republic of Eastport (MRE) this tradition goes back to the 1970s, when folklore has it, a fellow by the name of Bob Turner finished his boat work for the spring, took off his socks, threw them in a fire, had a beer and went sailing. The Annapolis Maritime Museum does this event right, with lots of food vendors, beer and all you can eat oysters.

One happy customer. You also can’t miss the Eastport Oyster Boys and their ‘Ode to the Equinox.’
